Summer greetings! I hope all is well in your world. Here, the paint still slings. In related news, my back woes are diminishing slowly but surely. Also: an award at a local show has kept wind in my sails for couple months now. Thank you for your interest, I hope you enjoy this edition of Hoeptner Happenings.
Summer ushered in home maintenance projects and a bit of cat drama. We had the driveway seal coated and doncha know the adopted yard cat, Ron snuck out and ran across the wet sealcoat! I did panic, assuming the worse... Getting him to a vet was impossible as my car was blocked in by the workers. My husband came home from work early, and we managed to get Ron into a carrier and off to the ER Vet. It was a harrowing ordeal and not just for us! Ron wouldn't let the Vet Techs touch.him.at.all. He hissed, thrashed and clawed! But they reassured us that the sealcoat was nontoxic. We brought him home and surprise?! He was fine. He had left paw prints on the carpets after the incident...so maybe he tracked it all off. He's back to napping in the sunshine and dancing on his hind legs for treats.
The cat in the painting above is a favorite model, a shelter rescue. I've painted him a few times and will include two older paintings here too... |
Shoptalk: Did you know that the ideal ratio of light/dark values a painting should be (according to experts) 60-30-10 or thereabouts? It's not a new concept. But applying it reduces the risk of rendering values in equal thirds which can be monotonous. I focused on this with the new paintings. "Under Observation" (at top) features light values that occupy around 60 % while darks and mediums take up the other 40ish%. You will see similar value ratios in the other new paintings, I may be on to something! Until next time, do enjoy summer!

Wind in my sails: I am thrilled to report “Solitude” won Best in Show at the Gates Mills 55th Annual Art Show! Exhibits at the historic Gates Mills Community House began as a way to fill the time between Sunday night movie presentations. Film Society founder Mauro "Mo" Novello began the tradition in 1971 and it has since become an annual spring celebration of regional talent. Special thanks to jurors: William Martin Jean, Frank Oriti, Susan Squires and Art Show Director, George Kozmon. Art Show Dates: April 19 - May 3, 2026

Two of my paintings were included in Meowtopia II, an online invitational group exhibition happened at the Poetic Tiger Gallery May 1 -May 27th. The selection of cat art in this show is wonderfully eclectic and specific. I worry my entries (Jumping Ginger and Sassy) weren't the best fit. If I am lucky enough to get invited again next year, I will try to do better! i.e. let the weird out a little more, pleez! Here's a link to see all.
